Every year on July 31st, we celebrate National Mutt Day! This is a day dedicated to the lovable, one-of-a-kind pups that don’t quite fit into a single breed category. These mixed-breed dogs, often affectionately called “mutts,” make up the majority of pets in shelters and rescues across the country. These pets are just as worthy of a forever home just as much as any purebred pup!
Here in Texas, our local shelters are feeling the strain more than ever. Adoption centers and foster homes are completely full, and many amazing dogs are still waiting for someone to give them a second chance. That’s why this National Mutt Day, we’re highlighting just how wonderful mixed-breed dogs are and why now is the perfect time to adopt or foster.
Why Mutts Make Great Pets
Mixed-breed dogs are special in so many ways. Not only are they often uniquely adorable with their one-of-a-kind looks, but they also tend to be:
- Resilient and adaptable
- Loyal and loving to their families
- Smart and eager to learn
- Lower-risk for certain inherited health conditions
Because mutts are a blend of different breeds, they often escape some of the breed-specific health issues that can affect purebred dogs. This can mean fewer vet visits and lower healthcare costs in the long run. But just because your pet might not need as many visits to the vet as your purebred, it doesn’t mean they don’t deserve or need regular preventative care.
Everyday Heartwarming Stories
Every week at Rose City, we get to meet incredible mixed-breed dogs who are thriving in their homes, many of whom were adopted after rough starts in life. There’s the fun Lab mix who loves belly rubs and the terrier blend who overcame anxiety with the love of a patient foster family. These dogs are living proof that mutts make amazing companions when given a chance.
If you’re looking for a pet who will bring joy, personality, and unconditional love into your home, don’t overlook the mutts!

How to Care for a Mixed-Breed Dog
Caring for a mutt isn’t that different from caring for a purebred dog. But there are a few things to keep in mind.
- Get a wellness check:
When you adopt a new pet, bring them in for a full exam. We’ll help establish a care plan, update vaccines, and check for any underlying health needs.
- Feed a balanced diet:
Stick to high-quality food and maintain a healthy weight, especially since some mixed breeds may have unknown metabolic or joint predispositions.
- Stay on top of preventative care:
Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is essential for all dogs, no matter the breed.
- Commit to training and socialization:
Mutts come in all personality types. Positive reinforcement and structure will help your new pet feel confident and at ease.
Mutts are every bit as loyal, lovable, and worthy of a good life as any other dog. This National Mutt Day, let’s give them the attention, and the homes that they deserve.
