Why “DOGust” Is a Day That Matters

At Rose City Animal Clinic, we believe every dog deserves to be celebrated. That includes the thousands of shelter dogs still waiting for their forever homes. Throughout the month of August, we’re paying extra attention to all our shelter pups! August 1st officially kicks off what is known affectionately as “DOGust!”

DOGust isn’t just another pet-themed holiday, it’s the universal birthday for all shelter dogs. It’s the start of a month where we honor the resilience, love, and second chances these animals represent. For dogs without a known birth date, DOGust gives us a reason to throw a party, snap a photo, and recognize that their life matters, no matter where their story began.

Why DOGust Matters

Shelter dogs come from all kinds of circumstances. Some are found as strays, others are surrendered by families who can no longer care for them. Many arrive without medical records, background history, or even a name. But despite all they’ve been through, shelter dogs have an incredible capacity for trust, healing, and love.

DOGust is a celebration of hope and a time to recognize all the families who open their hearts and homes to adopt.

Thinking About Adopting? Here’s What to Know

If DOGust has you considering adoption, we’re cheering you on. There’s no love like shelter dog love! Here are a few tips to get you started:

Take Your Time

Visit local shelters or rescue websites like Lone Star Transport Rescue or Big Dog Rescue Project. Look for a dog whose energy and needs match your lifestyle.

Ask Questions

Shelter staff are great at helping you understand each dog’s personality and background.

Prepare Your Home

Just like welcoming a new baby, bring home the basics: food, bowls, a comfy bed, toys, and a safe space for them to decompress.

Schedule a Wellness Check

Bring your new dog into our clinic for a first exam. We’ll get them up to date on vaccines, check for parasites, and go over a care plan together.

Be Patient and Consistent

Transitions can be tough. Even the most loving dog may need time to adjust. Use positive reinforcement, structure, and plenty of love.

How You Can Help (Even If You’re Not Ready to Adopt)

Not everyone can adopt, and that’s okay. You can still make a big impact this DOGust:

  • Foster through a local rescue group
  • Donate to shelters in your area
  • Volunteer your time, skills, or even pet supplies
  • Share adoptable dog profiles on social media to help them get seen

Every Dog Deserves a Birthday

DOGust is more than a symbolic celebration. It’s a call to action for our community to step up for dogs who haven’t yet found their families.

So this August 1st, whether you have a shelter dog at home, are thinking about adopting, or simply want to make a difference, join us in celebrating DOGust!
